Get your groups and teams communicating.
Instead
of having the team "scribe" jot notes on a little
piece of paper, set a whiteboard on each table. Small teams will
come up with BIG results, as they record notes, observations,
and answers on this Tabletop
Whiteboard, large enough for all to see.

3 Strikes and you're out!
Role-playing
can be a little anxiety producing for the players. Use an Urchin
Ball (or any other ball) to make the exercise a bit more fun
and less scary. Give the person in the "hot seat" 3
balls. When they get stuck and need a suggestion for what to say
(or do) next, invite them to throw a ball to someone for a
little help.

What's the difference between a "tool" and a
"toy"?
A
good tool lets you do your job more effectively . . . a toy
lets you be more effective AND make teaching and learning
more FUN!
Toobeez

groups (with respect to both number of people and size of
people!). Toobeez
Facilitation Notes are also available.

by
Dr. Sivasailam "Thiagi" Thiagarajan
In
this timeless article on successful facilitation, Thiagi
explores 6 tensions that facilitators wrestle with every
day.
- Structure: How rigidly or flexibly should the
small-group activity be implemented?
- Pace: How rapidly or leisurely should the
small-group activity be implemented?
- Interaction: How do group members relate to
each other?
- Focus: Which is more important, a positive
procedure or efficient results?
- Concern: Are we most concerned about
individual or group needs?
- Control: Where should group members look for
direction and validation?
The
key to effective facilitation, he explains, is
flexibility. Facilitators need to be adaptive, proactive,
responsive, and resilient. But how? By carefully balancing
these 6 tensions.
