Badda-Bing!
Phone
mail, e-mail, and busy lives make it
exceedingly difficult for trainers to
bring the class back after a break.
Here
are some of our favorite ways to bring
groups back after a break:
- Ring a chime,
blow a horn, blow a whistle
- Post a clock
on your overhead, visually showing
the return time
- Give noise
makers to early arrivers, have
them make some noise when you're
ready to resume
- Play the same theme song
every time you're ready to get back
to business

Read
'em their Rights
Deal
with those awkward silences that
sometimes greet your questions by
letting your group know what an
important role they play in their
learning process. In other words, make
them feel like valued "classroom
citizens."
To
do this, read them their "Bill
of Rights," and give them the
right to speak, the right to a classroom
of peers, and the right to a speedy
trial. Protect them from
self-incrimination, cruel and unusual
punishment, and unreasonable searches
for information.
Then,
if your question is met by silence, you
can ask if any of their rights are being
denied. Discuss the problem with your
group, so that they feel some ownership
over a resolution.

Swim
with the fishes
A
fish
is a really versatile prop no matter
what you teach. Here are some ideas on
how you might use it to lift your
group's spirit and make important
learning points:
- Big fish in a small pond
- Something smells fishy
- A fish out of water
- Cold fish
- There are plenty of fish in the
sea
- Don't fish in muddy waters
- Fish for information
- Need something like a fish needs a
bicycle
- Cry stinking fish
- Have other fish to fry

Handling
Difficult Questions and Questioners with
Eloquence and Ease.
Teachers
and trainers are frequently in the
"hot seat," fielding difficult
questions from difficult questioners.
You've got to know what to say, what not
to say, and how to say it...or not!
In
this brief article, Harrison shares some
mental and physical strategies to help
you think on your feet, speak on your
feet, and avoid putting your feet into
your mouth.
