    TIP OF THE MONTH

    Practice makes perfect!

Practice this popular and inexpensive trick a few times . . . and your learners will practice what you've taught them!
This magic trick is one of the easiest to learn, but makes a HUGE impact in 3 easy steps.

STEP #1: Flip through the Magic Coloring Book the first time and show viewers blank pages--explain that this represents the "open minds" that they brought to your class.

STEP #2: Flip through again and show them outlines of pictures--explain that this is the framework that you'll be sharing with them over the course of the session.

STEP #3: Flip a third time to show them the outlines have been filled in, creating bright colorful pictures. This, you can explain, only happens when they go back home and try to practice and apply what they've learned.

The Coloring Book is now available in the full classroom presentation size (8.5x11) and a mini version (4x6) for distribution to students as a reminder to PRACTICE!

    TOY OF THE MONTH

    Make a great First Impression!

Consider the table settings at your next training session. What message does it send? A pad and pencil may tell learners to listen up and take note!

If you want your group to relax and brace themselves for "learning made fun" (which improves retention), try setting out more playful items to set the tone for learning.

Our Orientation Kit sends these important messages to newcomers:

    • Illuminate us with your ideas--Light-up pin
    • Remain flexible and open to change--Rainbow Spring
    • Your positive energy is contagious--Party Horn
    • Learn from your mistakes--Rainbow eraser
    • Ask questions!--Question Mark
    • Reflect - Take care of yourself--Pocket Mirror
    • Seek broad perspectives--Prism
    • Be persistent--Puzzle

    FEATURE: Making Meetings Fun
    by Bernie De Koven

"Sometimes a meeting is actually fun. You may not realize it until after the meeting's over," says Bernie DeKoven in his article for 3M, "When Meetings Are Fun."

When that happens, he says, you're likely to reflect back on the meeting and find that you were speaking intelligently and actually accomplished something!

DeKoven, citing the research of Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, explains that "fun" tends to happen when you're in the flow--when you have clear goals and feedback, when you're engaged in a challenging activity that requires skill, when you need to concentrate on the task at hand, and when you lose self-consciousness of being involved.

"Flow" seems to happen when you're riding a wave between anxiety and boredom, between risk and safety. Bring this understanding of what makes acitivities fun and successful to your next training game!

Also, click here for Bernie DeKoven's exclusive collection of new words for fun, his "Lexifunni con of Funonyms," if you will.
