TOOL OF THE MONTH

Create positive incentives to learn

It's simple. When learning environments have an emotional component, students learn more. Prize Wheels quickly suggest carnival, play, and happy emotions, making them a terrific complement to your learning event.

You can easily customize the wheel with learning questions, reinforcement challenges, icebreaker questions, or even prizes. more...

TIP OF THE MONTH

Get more from every single student

When folks come to training, they're often told to put away what they know or unlearn some behavior they've perfected over time. What a demoralizing experience. How can we counteract this? Start with a few compliments.

1) If you're just getting your session started, acknowledge that many come to training with lots of experience that you will likely draw upon.  Ask folks what they feel they're already good at and might like to build upon (or what others might perceive them to be good at, in case folks don't like to boast).

2) At the end of an interactive session (if the group isn't too large), get the feel-good juices flowing by asking participants to compliment each of the other learners.  When they've collected their compliments, you can ask them what they might want to keep working on.

TOY OF THE MONTH

Make the learning stick

Training is only successful if it results in behavior change and if the learning sticks.

To ensure that your participants remember what they've learned, ask them to write down their "Million Bucks idea" on a faux bill. Whether they keep it in their wallet or tacked on the wall, it will be a constant reminder.

Giving back

"I wanted to give back to the children in Guinea, so I shared a bunch of teaching tools with them, including some Trainers Warehouse Whiteboards. Thank you for making them available.  The children were so excited about their new things."

6 great mnemonics for trainers!

I recently came across the blog of Sridhar Chandrasekaran, a trainer in India. Knowing how effective mnemonics are in helping students remember important material, Sridhar set to work developing a few T3 (Train the Trainer) mnemonics.  Following is one of his, plus a selection of our all-time favorite mnemonics for teaching and training.

B.R.E.A.D. How to facilitate icebreakers (Brief, Rules, Engage, Answer, Debrief)

Any Goofball Can Learn 4 Categories of online learning tools (Authoring; Games; Connectivity; LMSs)

K.I.S.S. A great reminder for work, life, training, projects, etc. (Keep it simple, stupid).

S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Seven ways to improve listening.

W.W.W. A basic debriefing tool. Ask these three critical questions: 1) What happened? 2) What worked well? 3) What would  you do differently?

F.R.O.G. Going forward tool that allows you to put learning into action (Feedback; Review; Obstacles; Goals).

If you have a favorite mnemonic, please share it with us!
