TOOL OF THE MONTH

Don't leave learning to chance
Ensure that participants know what to do with their new knowledge or perspective after they leave training. How?
Use the What? Trio Debrief to have an explicit conversation with your group. Ask point blank:
-
WHAT? What have you learned?
-
SO WHAT? Of what importance is the learning?
-
NOW WHAT? How will you ensure that you use the learning?

TIP OF THE MONTH
The MYTH
of learning styles
Neil Fleming's "VARK" model, in which he splits learners into categories of Visual, Aural, Reading/Writing, and Kinesthetic, has caused quite a controversy.
Critics say it's impossible to classify learners this way and you shouldn't change your teaching according to the type of learner you think you have. And yet, it's helpful to understand the various ways the brain absorbs new information.
Where does this leave us? Brain experts suggest that we engage as many different parts of the brain as we can to achieve optimal learning. So, let's revise:
"visual OR aural OR read/write OR kinesthetic"
to
"visual AND aural AND read/write AND kinesthetic"

TOY OF THE MONTH

Set a tone for eye-opening, effective learning
Happy Puffer Balls are a perfect way to let your group know that learning is going to be both eye-opening and fun.
Ask them what eye-openers they look forward to learning over the course of the event. Post their goals on a flip chart and let them influence the day's agenda.

Congratulations!
At the recent ASTD conference, we raffled off a Me First Game Buzzer Set, which was a hit of the show. We wish to congratulate our lucky winner, Janice Preston.

In her virtual acceptance speech, Janice told us,
"I love your products and continue to buy the 3-tone chime for my new instructors. We have the participants take responsibility for keeping us on track during our training session by using the chime. Everyone enjoys it! Thank you."

FEATURE:
Are you even listening
to me?

What are trainers, if not communicators? As facilitators of learning, both presenting and listening are critical to our success.
In her article, "Are you even listening to me? 10 ways to hear better!" Betty Lochner shares her wisdom listening. As I read it, I thought about how we as trainers can be better at what we do, by focusing as much on what our participants have to say as we do on what information we need to share.
Lochner says, "when you really listen to someone to hear what they are saying, you make them feel appreciated, interesting, and respected" -- what a great way to set the tone for an effective learning event.
