TOOL OF THE MONTH

Metaphors for learning
Our Elephant Sandbags were so popular last month that when we found an assortment of more, we couldn't resist. Each is great to toss around for Q&A games, set as a mascot on the front desk, or use for targeting review and debrief discussions.
The Sandbag Octet offers (at least) eight great metaphors for learning environments. Buy them individually or as a set.
-
T-Rex - Stick with the old ways of doing things
-
Elephant - Remember
-
Butterfly - Change
-
Giraffe - Stick your neck out
-
Frog - Leap ahead!
-
Sea Turtle - Adapt to different environments
-
Crab - Don't Hide/Avoid/Complain
-
Dolphin - Make it fun/ Be playful

TIP OF THE MONTH
Find out what works!
I've read so many discussions recently about e-Learning vs. face-to-face learning.
I predict that, over time, our focus will change. The question will not be "live or online?" but rather "what's the topic and what's the best way to teach it?" After all, we have so many methods at our disposal!
To determine the effectiveness of training, Donald Kirkpatrick's 4 Level Model, first published in 1959, remains the standard. The 4 levels, simply are:
-
REACTION: How did the participants react to the training?
-
LEARNING: Did participants acquire the knowledge and skill?
-
BEHAVIOR: Are participants able to apply what they learned?
-
RESULTS: Has the training affected positive business results?
Kirkpatrick and others have written volumes explaining the theory and exploring implementation methods. As we discussed whether to pursue live or online learning, let's fall back on Kirkpatrick to determine the right answer, topic by topic.

TOY OF THE MONTH

Even executives benefit from fidgeting
Why do so many trainers tell me that they can't use "toys" in training because they teach executives or engineers?
If anyone needs something to do with their hands to balance the speed of their brain activity, it's this serious group. The Mental Block Fiddle has a mature look, and still feels good in your hands.

Training or Educating?

In his recent article, "Trainer Talk: Education vs. Training," published in Training Magazine, Bob Pike explored the question of whether we are Trainers or Educators. Are we Teachers? Trainers? Facilitators of learning? What DO we call ourselves?
As for Bob, he unapologetically calls himself a trainer (more specifically, "a trainer's trainer") and offers 6 tips to help participants learn the material he's trying to convey.
Read article here.
Bob Pike is the founder and Chairman of the Bob Pike Group and Creative Training Techniques Press. He has trained more than 125,000 trainers on five continents and been a frequent presenter at ASTD and Training Conferences. Bob is author of the Creative Training Techniques Handbook (now in its Third Edition), "The Fun Minute Manager," and co-author of One-on-One Training, Dealing with Difficult Participants, and 50 Creative Training Closers.
