TOOL OF THE MONTH
Cell phones?
Discuss 'em like
grown-ups!
I've heard so many
discussions about how trainers and teachers are dealing with cell
phone use in class. The best advice I've heard is to
"have an adult discussion about it." Ask your group
what they think makes sense. Have them develop some rules of conduct.
If they make the rules,
they're more likely to abide by them . . . and you're not the bad
guy! If you'd like to play a short video or show a cartoon
reflecting your feeling about inappropriate phone use, try out some
of the slides or the music video
on our Transitions for Training
CD.

TIP OF THE MONTH

Whatever
you do, Don't call them icebreakers!
Many
people hate icebreakers. They perceive them as a stupid, frivolous,
and generally, a waste of time.
Yet, they can play an important role in setting the tone for a
learning event. So, instead, begin with an "opener" or
"warm up" that introduces your topic, gets people
participating, and addresses their goals or concerns.
Write
probing questions on a Spinning Wheel
or Thumball
to quickly hone in topics that matter, rather than asking for a
"name and where you're from."

TOY OF THE MONTH

Choose to change
Learning new things can
produce a good bit of anxiety. Stress relief toys are one way
to take the edge off. The Choose to Change Ball
sends the additional message that learning and change are up to
learner. You can't force change, especially when teaching capable
adults.
What you can do is
acknowledge their existing expertise, share new models of thinking
and doing, allow them to test them out in a safe environment, and
invite them to "choose to change" in whatever ways will
suit them.

FEATURE:
Valuing
Teachers and Trainers

As summer winds down and
"back to school" is fresh in our minds, let us consider
the true impact of our trainers and teachers, who are too often
under-valued and under-appreciated. I found this thoughtful
article quoted online.
What Do Teachers Make?
by Mona Kapoor Choudhury
The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.
One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He
argued: "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided
his best option in life was to become a teacher?"
To stress his point he said to another guest; “You’re a teacher,
Bhaarati. Be honest. What do you make?”
Bhaarati, who had a
reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to
know what I make? (She paused for a second, then began...)
"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they
could.
I make ... read more here.
