TIP OF THE MONTH
Snowball Fight!
In anticipation of the upcoming snow season (which has so far held off in the Northeast), I send thanks to "Kemi L" for this terrific tip that gets people's minds and bodies involved in learning.
Kemi suggests, "Have people write questions about the training topic on pieces of paper. Ask them to wad the paper into balls and throw them at each other (gently) like a snowball. When they're done, each person picks up the nearest ball. Taking turns, each reads and answers the question, (or asks the facilitator for help).

Take a Stand
Connecting Learners to Learners
and Learners to the Topic

by Sharon Bowman, M.A.
"In traditional training sessions, learners remain seated while participating in small group discussions about topic-related issues. With Take-a-Stand, learners move around the room and choose a designated place to stand before engaging in small group discussions. In effect, the activity includes kinesthetic (movement) and spatial (visual)
ways of learning as well as linguistic (verbal)."
In this five to fifteen minute exercise, Sharon explains how learners can use higher order thinking skills (i.e. analysis and evaluation) to engage more deeply in the concepts they're learning.
